Begg Confirms Bennetta for 2014 W.J. Healy Stakes

June 17th, 2014

Having also nominated the classy mare for an appearance in this featured Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm this weekend, trainer Graeme Begg has confirmed Bennetta will accept a position in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) come Wednesday’s final field and barrier draw confirmation.

Having recorded a strong and consistent racing three race preparation this season without a race victory, Begg said that accepting into the W.J. Healy arguably posed a better chance of Bennetta returning to the winner’s circle this weekend.

“The main thing is that she isn’t well suited at weight-for-age, she meets some of the better mares at level weights, I think we just need to drop her back a peg and try to win a race with her more so than running a nice fourth or fifth,” Begg told TVN.

“There is no suggestion at this stage she would be retired after Saturday, more or less trying to get her back to winning a race.

“She has only had three runs this time in and run well in two out of the three and her other start was in the weight-for-age Group 1 (All Aged Stakes).”

Contesting an impressive total of three race wins and four minor places from just 15 competitive starts to date, Bennetta performed well over the spring of 2013; finishing fourth in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) and third amongst particularly classy company in the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) most notably in September.

Unlucky to finish third when blocked for a run in the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m) first-up this season, the General Nediym mare was unable to match the late pace when sixth in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 26th, but returned to impressive form when third in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm last time out.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 W.J. Healy Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
