2014 W.J. Healy Stakes Nominations Released

June 16th, 2014

A talented field of 16 runners have been nominated for this weekend’s Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse, highlighted by several notable performers over the 2014 Australian racing calendar so-far.

Running on from the rear of the field to finish seventh in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) first-up on June 7th, trainer Con Karakatsanis has nominated Howmuchdoyouloveme for a tilt at the 2014 W.J. Healy Stakes.

Champion of the 2013 edition of this weekend’s Group 3, Howmuchdoyouloveme contested a largely strong and consistent preparation over the late summer/early spring of 2014; finishing second to Knoydart in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1100m) first-up, and while unlucky to be blocked for a run in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) on February 8th, claimed impressive results amongst classy company in both the Group 2 Apollo Stales (1400m) and Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) before returning to the paddock.

Unable to handle the late pace of the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) last time out on June 7th, trainer Shawn Mathrick is confident Gig will be far-better for her maiden appearance in Queensland and is expecting a polished performance at Eagle Farm this weekend.

Contesting four race wins and 13 minor places from 30 competitive starts to date, Gig has arguably hit peak condition over her current preparation; finishing second to Sistine Demon in the particularly well-contested Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) and sixth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster (1200m) before securing back-to-back third placings in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) and Winter Championship Open (1400m) prior to the Dane Ripper.

Having also been included in nominations for the featured Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) this weekend, Mathrick has revealed he will allow Wednesday’s final fields and barrier draws dictate the path taken by Gig on Saturday.

A strong and consistent performer over notable events in the Autumn Racing Carnival, trainer Joe Pride has nominated Recoinage for a maiden appearance north of the border this season in the W.J. Healy Stakes.

Claiming two victories and a further 10 minor places from just 21 competitive starts, Recoinage finished second to Lilliburlero in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) on February 22nd, and continued to build in form in finishing third in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute (1200m) and fourth in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) on March 29th.

Unlucky to finish second in the At Sea Handicap (1100m) last time out, the Flying Spur mare is likely to return to the spelling paddock following the W.J. Healy Stakes, but will be more than a threat if allocated an ideal gate at Wednesday’s barrier draw.

Quickly building to the task this time in, Bennetta finished third to Flamberge and Hot Snitzel in the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1400m) first-up on April 5th, and continued to display her class in finishing sixth in the featured Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) and third in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) just two weeks ago.

More than stamping her claims as one to watch in major events over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, Bennetta is more than a chance of success from any starting position this weekend, having proven ability to overcome even the most awkward of barriers.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 W.J. Healy Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
