Leading into the WJ Healy are a number of good races that the gallopers may come via and that punters can keep an eye on as a guide to their bets including the Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) a fortnight before at the same track, and the Listed Chief De Beers (1100m) at the end of May at Doomben Racecourse.

If local horses are continuing on with their current campaign after the WJ Healy the Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m) back at the track two weeks later is often on the agenda.

WJ Healy Stakes History

The WJ Healy Stakes was first run in 1979 with Painted Red taking out the inaugural edition.

Over the years the race has undergone a number of name changes due to sponsorship including the Tatt’s QLD Mercedes Benz Stakes and the Tatt’s QLD Carlton Draught Stakes.

It has been known and registered as the WJ Healy Stakes from 2006 to the present day.
